In a fast-paced world where we are bombarded with the latest colours, trends and textures, it is becoming more and more important for the individual to have a voice. We have to identify our values and, from all the design directions around the world, take what we need to express ourselves. The “trends” of today may guide our inspiration, but also allow and even encourage us to be original.
For this reason, the use of colour is important in conveying deep messages and meanings, and together with textures, it challenges the senses.
What stood out at design shows such as imm Cologne, the International Interiors Show, Heimtextil, and the Interior Design Show (IDS1), to name a few, is that urbanisation is playing a defining role in the design of interiors. Not only are people embracing the ruggedness of the interior environment, but they are finding ways to bring in nature and soften the edge of minimalism to create spaces of comfort where they can recharge.
Here are some of our top picks for 2018!

Ultraviolet lights the way
A dramatic purple shade, Pantone’s colour of the year for 2018, Pantone 18-3838 Ultraviolet, imagines originality, ingenuity and presents a creative inspiration that points towards the future. The colour is symbolic of experimentation, encouraging individuals to make their unique mark and push creative boundaries.
Full thanks and acknowledgement are given to AkzoNobel, Cerasarda, Gruppo Romani, Heimtextil, IDS18, imm Cologne, Koelnmesse, Pantone, Sicis and Skinwal for the inspiration and images provided to compile this article.
