“It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life that no person can sincerely try to help another without helping themselves.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
The Avance Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme is a deliberate, focused, coherent and progressive programme that is well coordinated and entrenched throughout Avance Carpets’ business, including among its own employees.
It was essential for Avance Carpets that it supported initiatives within its own community, as it was aware of the desperate need of many impoverished communities living in and around Harrismith. Avance regards its CSI as a strategic business function throughout the business, rather than something implemented on an ad-hoc basis.
But most gratifying for Avance is to see the level of support that its CSI programme receives from its employees, who participate and contribute in their own personal capacities too, as well as other local businesses in the region.
Avance Carpets is a proud supporter of and contributor to the Maluti Child Care Project, its primary CSI project, which feeds more than 4500 children under the age of 15 years. The project covers Harrismith and surrounding areas and townships.
About the Maluti Child Care Project
Meals are provided to children at lunchtime, which is often the child’s only meal for the day. This is done from kitchens built into seven containers, and in one school. These kitchens are spread over different townships and settlements, with three containers in the school in Intabazwe, three containers in Tsiame B and one container in Mokolokweng.
Without these kitchens, many parents on the poverty line would not be able to fully provide for the needs of their children; it is a vital provision for the community.
Funding also goes towards the employment costs for the Maluti social workers who are assisted by 42 volunteer child-care givers to provide psychological, emotional and physical support to sick and abused children.
More funding is required to enable the Maluti project not only to provide for the children on a day-to-day basis, but also to be able to host netball and soccer days for physical education, supply them with school uniforms and stationery, as well as give them small parcels at Christmas.
