Conference highlights everything there is to know about art, design and media.

In September 2014, the Greenside Design Centre College of Design (GDC) and the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Johannesburg (FADA) hosted an international Cumulus Conference focused on the theme entitled: “Design with the other 90%”.

FLOORS in Africa magazine and Walls & Roofs magazine are proud of their partnership with this year’s Cumulus Conference by supporting its initiatives and actively taking part by supplying visitors with goodie bags containing these two reputable titles. These contain a wealth of knowledge on everything within the built industry, which includes the sphere of design.

GDC was among the first design institutions in Africa to become a member of Cumulus, the International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media, which comprises the top design schools in the world. Cumulus offers a global forum for partnership, friendship and knowledge sharing aimed at enhancing the education and research of art, design and media.

The conference followed a rigorous double-blind peer review process for the submission of conference papers – in total, 109 papers were presented by delegates from around the world. Coinciding with this conference, GDC hosted its annual community project called “10%”, which gives ten percent of national teaching time to community projects. This year saw students and lecturers from Australia, Switzerland, Finland, Canada, the USA and Denmark attending the three-week programme.

The Secretariat of Cumulus, Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture in Finland, complimented The University of Johannesburg and GDC on “the most successful Cumulus Conference ever staged”.
