“We need to work hard at taking what we know and the materials we have available locally and internationally, and begin to explore designs that push the boundaries of authenticity, helping clients to discover their own story.” This is where designers need to focus their attention, according to Philip Richards, kitchen designer and judge of the Caesarstone Kitchen of the Year competition for 2016.

The 2016 competition awarded one local and one international kitchen design.

Best local kitchen
Amy Kidger of Michele Throssell Interiors was given carte blanche for designing an exquisite new holiday home in Zimbali Estate, but the homeowners requested an eye-level oven, a cold room and a pantry.

To accommodate this storage space, a central unit extends up to the ceiling and is clad in timber with a dovetail joint along the edges to create the illusion of a solid box. This use of timber also enhances the organic feel of the ceilings and floors.

The island, including the sides and drawer fronts, was clad in Calacatta Nuvo Caesarstone to create a seamless look and it is elevated off the floor with brass kick plates.

Indirect feature lighting was added in the cupboards and filters through the glass panel doors.

Top imported kitchen
In designing a kitchen for a luxurious holiday home in Plettenberg Bay, Sam Edmeades and Paul Raymer from Inside Living (Garden Route) applied some distinctive European kitchen design trends. All the working parts of the kitchen were imported, making up the 80% required to qualify for this category.

The designers incorporated a lot of different levels through floating design and using different thicknesses of materials. The space necessitated a linear design, resulting in an island of 4,5m long with a display surface on the one end.

Adding a local element, the designers opted for a bespoke French oak which repeats the timber in other parts of the home.

Interestingly, the door and drawer fronts are detachable and can easily be clipped off and replaced when necessary.
