Lafarge used light-steel frame (LSF) technology to help build new rooms for a youth facility in Katlehong.

Lafarge contributed to the expansion of a facility in Katlehong, a centre just outside Johannesburg that aims to ensure basic pre-primary education is accessible to all children. This project aligns very well with the company’s ambition of building better cities; cities and towns that are more connected, more durable, more beautiful and more desirable places in which people can live, work, learn and play. The facility, known as The Break-Through Centre, received an addition of two extra rooms, as the original brick structure had collapsed during the building process.

“Our job was to create a robust home for The Break-Through Centre to ensure the children assisted here have a safe, warm environment in which they thrive,” said Lafarge Gypsum’s managing director, Jean-Paul Croze.

Lafarge used light-steel frame (LSF) technology and built a robust building within a short amount of time. “All Lafarge metal products are ecospecifier-listed and our steel-frame technology complies with SANS 10400–XA as well as the additional requirements of SANS 204, a further enhancement of energy-efficiency. In assisting with the building of The Break-Through Centre, energy-efficiency was of vital importance due to the difference it will make to the comfort of the community using the centre,” explained Croze.

When commenting about the energy-efficiency of the building, Croze explains that insulation in all the wall cavities was vital to make the building quicker to warm up in winter or to cool down in summer, to ensure comfort and lower running costs. “These are key factors that drive Lafarge Gypsum innovation,” said Croze.

“It is our ambition to help build better cities and living environments for people, including more beautiful areas that are conducive to improved living and learning conditions. We are delighted to be part of this process at The Break-Through Centre in Katlehong, Johannesburg. Our innovative solutions have helped us to accomplish this,” concluded Croze.
