This year’s Cersaie International Exhibition of Ceramic Tile and Bathroom Furnishings took place in Bologna, Italy, showcasing the latest and best in tile trends, new products and innovations that will be making their mark on the commercial and residential markets for the next couple of years.
Whilst the Floors Magazine team could not attend this year’s show due to Covid restrictions, we have compiled a list of the top eight tile trends as a sneak peek. We hope you enjoy it!
1. Mimic wallpaper with large format tiles
Designing with wallpaper became one of the hottest interior design trends in 2021, and this trend is not slowing down any time soon.
The latest digitally printed ceramic tiles, or glossy lacquer patterns on porcelain stoneware backgrounds give these slab tiles gorgeous wallpaper-like patterns. Unlike wallpaper, these tiles can be used in any room without the risk of water or heat damage when installed near a sink, shower or fireplace. These large format tiles have been gaining popularity as designers find new creative ways to use them – from covering entire walls and backsplashes to creating a floor design element for an entryway.
2. Tones for a Palm Springs inspired bathroom
Earth tones have been the new neutral colours for a while now because of their ability to easily transform from last year’s craze for oatmeal-coloured everything into something warm and inviting in peachy shades and cosy neutrals. The 70’s-inspired trend is still driving major design changes with these sun-baked desert hues at the forefront.
3. Subtle metallic shimmer in earth tones
Metallic tiles are the perfect solution to add instant warmth and character to any space. They bring an elegant yet rustic feel to any room, and they can be used as accent pieces or as major design elements, depending on the desired look. Metallic tiles come in a wide range of different colours and textures, but be on the lookout for warmer metallic tones like copper, gold, bronze and silver to add an extra shimmer.
4. Bold botanicals for Jungalow Lovers
The Jungalow design movement is picking up steam and moving to the mainstream. This focus on botanical elements – from palm frond wall treatments to bold flower patterns – allows one to walk on the wild side with jungle-inspired prints or to add a meadow effect to walls.
Botanical tiles are a natural addition to this new style. Tile colours and patterns that pay tribute to Mother Nature with botanical prints, rocking patterns, bright colours, and unique shapes will be the trendiest tiles of 2022 for the kitchen backsplash or bathroom.
5. Shades of green are the Colours of the Year
Tie in the colours of the year – Benjamin Moore October Mist and Sherwin Williams Evergreen Fog are soothing hues of the latest paint colour of the year – green. From rich emerald to jade green, these greens are edging out blue as the most popular colour for interiors. Evoking a sense of calm, green is a natural choice for people to turn their homes – which may still be doubling as their place of work, childcare and school – into a cosy retreat.
6. Striped subway tiles in a chevron pattern
Bright, colourful tiles are popping up everywhere. As the world becomes more and more digital, people are looking to bring back some of that real-life beauty into their homes. Bright, colourful tiles are perfect for kitchens and bathrooms or any other space that needs a little “pop”. Whether you’re looking for something modern or traditional, there’s no shortage of options out there.
7. High impact terrazzo
In 2022, the world of home design is all about terrazzo tile. This comes as no surprise, given that it has been a popular choice for homeowners and contractors alike since its inception in 1945. The beauty of this natural material is unmatched by any other flooring option – and with new advances in manufacturing techniques, it’s even more durable than before.
8. Stone slabs
Stone slabs are here to stay. We’re talking about the beautiful, natural stone that you see in so many Pinterest-inspired homes.
Stone is a natural and timeless material that has been used for centuries. Stone can be used in many different ways, such as stone slab flooring, stone walls, stone countertops and stone veneers on exterior sidings for interior walls.
