The fourth annual Association of South African Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS) is set to take place on 2 August 2018 at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand. This year’s theme, TRACTION, emphasises growth actioned by progress that is both forward and upward moving. According to Karl Trusler, EduTech Director of the ASAQS, the theme taps into how quantity surveyors are making progress as a profession.

This year’s conference will also host the first Living Spaces 5D BIM Estimating Competition, which will give estimators the opportunity to show off their skills and value with the latest take-off, estimation tools on the market. The winner of the competition will receive a R10 000 cash prize, courtesy of Interbuild Africa plus a free BIM 4 Professionals course worth R6 500, courtesy of the BIM (Building Information Modelling) Institute. The runner up will receive a one year free WinQS licence worth R12 650, courtesy of ACE Computing Solutions, plus a free BIM online course worth R1 950, courtesy of the BIM Institute.

Vaughan Harris of the BIM Institute says that besides the great prizes on offer, participants can use this opportunity to explore the latest electronic take-off software tools available in a non-threatening but structured, outcomes-based environment.

“The BIM Institute has developed this competition to encourage the learning, testing and exploring of these digital tools and processes to help estimators uncover new applications while understanding the importance of classifying elements in a 3D Model,” says Vaughan.

The competition launched on 9 July 2018 and registrations are now open. The competition criteria are available via the following link: http://www.biminstitute.org.za/5d-bim-estimating-competition/. Entry to the competition is free of charge and the competition deadline for submissions is 23 July 2018.
